Julian was clearly affected by her words. As someone who was walking on a path to power and status, her words were direct challenge to his own belief.
If love really is the ultimate truth like she claims it is, then why would there be any differences among the people?
It simply isn’t. The answer may be hard for some people to swallow, but it is the truth. Love itself creates differences.
When a mother, a figure of an unconditional love, prays for her child to come out on top of the class, she herself is engaging in the first act of creating differences in the society.
This desire for superiority, rather than just wishing for her child to develop talents and skills, comes from her love itself.
Many of us believe in the existence of God, another example of an unconditional love. But what is the difference between God and us?
It’s simply power and authority. Their power of creation and their authority over destruction—these are the things that separates us from the gods.
When someone prays to the god, Do they do it for gentle compassion and love?
No, they do it for protection, guidance, and creation—all of which rely on power and authority.
So, to believe that love on its own could govern the world without the aid of any power or authority was just wishful thinking. Julian was well aware of this fact, and if his family were to fall tomorrow, no amount of love would help him avoid the ridicule and disdain he would receive from the very same person who advocated love the most.
Any kingdom needs all three principle that is power, authority and love to continue its reign for a long period of time. To reject others and adopt only one principle was a fools decision no matter whether it be love or power.
Even with the viscount’s humble demeanor, his castle was luxurious adorned with gold and other rare stones and jewels which clearly hinted at his ambition and dream and Despite the viscountess advocacy for love, her own household clearly showed the signs of separation and differences.
The branch family members were given less power and authority than the main family while their heirs were not showered with resources and other growth related opportunities, the way the main family did to their heirs.
Afterall everyone loves their own family and prioritizes them over other and that is how the differences are created.
It is just how the world works.
