Chapter 642: Head strong, wall weak
What had happened back down in the arena…
‘Quick question, is it possible for me to break this weird spatial barrier without accidentally popping this marble? I’ve been getting this weird vibe in the back of head that if I do something to this barrier, the whole place might come down or pop like a bubble.’
=Technically yes, milord. You just need to actively channel [Chaos] into the area you want to distort before doing anything.=
‘Okay, this won’t turn the barrier into like…pudding or anything. right? I’m still weirded out on how I turned poisoned tea into a milkshake.’
‘I…wait…is this because I’m not strong enough to control this shit yet, or I need a special tool like the [Godoku Gourd] and [Veteran’s Demon Club]?’
<=Yes.=>
‘Of course…well whatever, I might as well check on the princess while I’m at it…why do I seem to be a homing beacon for royalty?’
<=The Protagonist effect.=>
‘What was that?’
<=Nothing.=>

Stop me if you heard this one before.
A person is born into a life of privilege where they want for nothing or they’re born with an incredible talent that allows them to rise up the ranks of society because of how great that talent is.
One would assumed that because of this privilege and/or talent, the person in question will end up suffering from success and have a rich social circle that mere mortals could only dream about. But there in lies the problem, most of the world is composed of “mere mortals”.
Jinju Ren was born as the 38th Imperial Princess of his grand majesty, the Pearl Scale Emperor.
As an Imperial Princess, Jinju Ren was given access to all of the high quality medicines a cultivator could want or need, access to powerful aether arts and treasures most other families would backstab each other for and entry to the [Hidden Grotto], a powerful wandering ruin that the Pearl Scale Emperor nailed down centuries ago to serve as a personal training ground for he and his kin. For all intents and purposes, Jinju Ren basically had her future cultivation path laid out the moment she could even crawl.
On top of winning the birthright lottery though, she was also blessed with the type of beauty people would launch thousands of ships over and martial talent that could put most warriors in her generation to shame. It is actually speculated amongst the people that even if she didn’t have access to all the top tier facilities and resources that came from her being royalty, she could’ve easily become one of the top warriors amongst her generation.
Of course, she wouldn’t really know anything about that latter bit due to nobody in her generation being willing to challenge her or accept her challenges. They were all afraid of either her identity or her martial prowess.
Due to her identity as being one of the Pearl Scale Emperor’s children, not many people in the empire her age were willing to challenge her. While they weren’t entirely sure if she was the vindictive type, there had been about thirty-seven princes and princesses before her and about ten of them were spiteful bastards. Absolutely nobody wanted to be the first to find out if the princess was the vindictive type, so many people treated her with respectful disdain.
On the flip side, she was more powerful than most other warriors in her generation, not a lot of people were willing to fight her, but there were a lot of suck-ups which she loathed and distant admirers which she tolerated. However, none of these people could actually keep up with her in terms of cultivation, so she couldn’t consider them an “equal” either.
<
The long and short of it was that Jinju Ren was an incredibly lonely girl who desperately wanted someone she could consider a “kindred spirit”.
<
It didn’t matter if that person was someone she could call a friend, a rival or even a lover, she just wanted someone she could consider being close with that wasn’t her family.
<
That’s why she imposed herself onto her older brother’s plan to visit the Zhen Clan, convinced him to lend her the [Dream Gossamer Mask], and faked the identity of a wandering hero in order to participate in the Zhen Clan’s famous competition in order to fight people and find someone she can call her kindred-
<
<
Just as Princess JinJu Ren was about to enter a depressive funk spiral complete with unnecessarily long flashbacks to a lonely as fuck childhood, the accented voice of a certain puppet master suddenly shook out of her thoughts.
Staring directly at her crying form was Zhen Liu, one of the exiled grandchildren of the Heart Thief, with a blank look on his face. Out of everyone in this competition, he was the one she was most looking forward to in regards to fighting. None of the other competitors in this tournament dared to challenge the whole arena and the audience after slapping someone silly, so she thought this guy could be her “equal”.
But now she wouldn’t be able to confirm this due to the fight being prematurely stopped…or so she thought.
<
<
<
Jinju Ren was fairly certain she was hearing things out of depression at this point.
Did this boy seriously ask her if she wanted to keep fighting? Was he not aware of the situation they were in right now?
Regardless of these question crossing her mind, she ended up answering directly from her heart…but she wasn’t entirely sure why she did so. It just felt right to do so.
<
<
<
Before Jinju Ren could fully question what Zhen Liu was saying, she could feel a strange energy suddenly spike in the space around her as Zhen Liu placed both of his hands against the spatial barrier separating them. She wasn’t entirely sure what it was, but something about it caused her to instinctually flinch.
Not just her though, but her familiars, the dragon-blooded beasts that swore fealty and were now embedded in her [Dragon Dominator Saber], also began to instinctually act up.
<
There was something about this energy being released by Zhen Liu that caused her to feel compelled to fight it, to destroy it, to remove it from her sight for defying a natural order that was fundamental to the universe’s existence. And yet…another part of her couldn’t help but feel excited and fascinated by this energy. A part of her even felt that this, this feeling was what she was looking for.
Her “equal”.
<
<
At this point, the cracks had gone what Zhen Liu must’ve determined to be enough, so he stopped releasing that strange energy but kept his hands on the barrier for some reason.
<
<
Jinju Ren was taken aback by this statement, since it was more or less what she was wanting to know, but there was more pressing question in her mind, especially since she noticed how Zhen Liu was pulling his head back.
<
<
<
*CRACK*
Before Jinju Ren could even ask anything, Zhen Liu proceeded to literally headbutt the spatial barrier blocking him, into pieces.
