Chapter 106: Chapter 106
Inside the Forest of Death, a couple that consist of a man and a woman could be seen fighting on the side of a lake. No, they were not fighting against each other, but their assailant, a wolf pack, a remnant from the Giant Wolf they fought earlier. The man and woman were, of course, Long and Ling. Ling launched her talisman towards a wolf, incinerating it into cinders, “Tch, these guys are endless”, she clicked her tongue in annoyance. Then, Long used his staff, thrusting into the mouth of a charging wolf, “Explode!” he yelled.
Fire mana gathered inside the wolf, exploding it from inside. Its innards were about to fly out, but Long immediately cast a barrier. “Phew, good thing I’m quick”, Long wiped his sweat, “I don’t want wolf innards on my clothes”, he quipped. “Then don’t explode them when they’re near you”, Ling rebuked while sending another talisman to another wolf, this time electrocuting a poor wolf. “Yeah, I know. How dumb am I….” Long shook his head while sending a rushing wolf flying with his staff.
Ling and Long kept pummeling the wolf pack to oblivion to no end. “Fuck!” Ling cursed, “When will this end.” Long frowned; he scrutinized his surrounding, “It’s thinning”, he said. “What?” Ling turned her head at Long. “The wolves are thinning. Just a little more, and we should be okay”, Long informed. Ling spat at the ground, “Tch, I hope you are right”, she said, bringing her talismans up close to her chest. Long grabbed his staff with both hands as he stood back to back with Ling. “You know, we make a pretty good team”, Long said with a smile.
“We’ll talk about it later, for now, we got wolves to kill”, Ling said. As time went by, Ling and Long thinned the pack until eventually, the wolves were all dead. “Phew, we finally did it” Long wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Y-yeah, y-yeah, we did it”, Ling had her head down, panting in exhaustion. “As I thought, this forest is strange”, Long exclaimed while rubbing his chin. “Yeah, no shit. Yesterday we dealt with wolves, today we dealt with wolves. I thought that since that Giant Wolf was dead, there would be no more wolves”, Ling said as she slouched down to the ground.
“Do you think that legends are real?” Long asked while observing his surrounding for potential threats. “What are you asking all of a sudden?” Ling frowned. “I mean, this land had many legends, right? Do you think that they are real?” Long asked after explaining his earlier question. Ling shook her head, “We’re in this situation, but you’re still thinking about legends?” Long sighed, “Look, just humour me for a second. Do you think that legends are real?” he asked again. Ling pursed her lips, “Fine, I’ll humour you. I do; I think that legends are real. Although most legends are the result of peoples exaggerations.”
Long nodded, “Then, I think we experienced one of them yesterday and today”, he said with a solemn tone. “What do you mean?” Ling shot her eyes wide. “Do you remember the tale that people used to tell when we were young? I said that considering that we’re about the same age”, Long explained. Ling squinted; she massaged her glabella while thinking about what Long had said. Then, a sudden realization dawned on her, “Do you mean…..” Long weakly nodded, “Yes, the legend is real, and we’re stuck in the middle of it.”

After a night of arduous travelling, finally, Eru arrived right at the entrance of Tailwind City. “Ah, Tailwind City, it feels like it has been a long time”, Eru breathed in, savouring the air. “Ah, it’s you”, a guard yelled; he pointed at Eru with a surprised look on his face. “Ah, Captain An Lin, hello”, Eru said with a smile. The guard, which was An Lin, approached Eru with a pleasant smile, “Why are you here?” he asked. Eru scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, “Well, a lot of things happened”, he said with a slightly red face.
“No matter. Don’t just stand there, come come, I’ll treat you to lunch”, An Lin offered. Eru waved his hand, “No, thank you, Captain. I need to get going, actually. I left Ling and Long for two days already”, he explained. “Is that so? So, where are you going?” An Lin asked. “That’s why I’m here. I brag about being an Adventurer, but I failed a crucial single task” Eru smiled embarrassingly. “You forgot to ask the location name, isn’t it?” An Lin asked with a chuckle. “Don’t hold me up on that”, Eru shook his head with a slightly red face, “I’m going to the Adventurers Guild; if you don’t mind, why don’t you accompany me there?” Eru friendly suggested. “Sure”, with that, An Lin accompany Eru to head towards the Adventurers Guild.

Ling and Long were standing back to back; again, they faced against a pack of wolves. “Damn it! This has been the third day since we fought a wolf pack”, Ling cursed. Long nodded in agreement, “Even I am sick of fighting against these wolves”, the usually calm Long was irritated. After that, Long stabbed his staff into the ground, “Quake”, he said loudly before the ground trembled. Long’s spell caused the wolves to jump up into the sky. When the wolves jumped, Ling immediately threw multiple talismans at the wolves. The talismans had various properties in them, as the wolves died of different causes.
Then, a few wolves growled before charging and rushing towards Long and Ling, respectively. “These mutts are so persistent”, Ling complained while throwing her talismans at the wolves. “Argh”, the wolves screamed as they were evaporated by Ling’s talismans. As if he did not want to lose out to Ling, Long swung his staff around, “Wind Blast”, he yelled. The wolves around him were blasted away by Long’s spell. A few of them even had their innards flying out because of the severity of Long’s spell.
Witnessing Long’s prowess, Ling had her mouth agape, “You….. You’re quite powerful, huh?” Long flashed a gentle smile at Ling, “I can handle myself”, he said as he used his staff to smack an incoming wolf. The wolf’s cheek caved in before its body was sent flying, crashing through a tree. “Yep, you’re definitely a powerful guy”, Ling quipped after seeing how the wolf was easily flung by Long. “Thank you for the compliment”, Long bowed slightly. The both of them stood back to back, fending off the wolf pack’s assault.
However, as time passed by, Ling was beginning to tire. “Hah, hah, hah”, Ling clutched her chest, panting hard, “This is endless”, she complained. “I agree”, Long smacked another wolf that was about to hit Ling, “This wolf pack seemingly had more to them than the previous one”, he exclaimed. “Tch”, Ling scoffed, “Bastards, all of them. Especially that kid, Eru. When the fuck is he going to come back!?” she cursed out loud. Long smiled slightly, “You’re quite a passionate woman, huh?” he said while twirling his staff all across his body, hitting all the wolves that were coming at them from every single angle.
Long fended off the wolf pack on his own while Ling rested, sitting on the ground. Seeing Long fighting hard, Ling was embarrassed for herself. She stood up, “Fuck this shit”, she cursed, “I’m fighting too.” Ling then brought out a couple more talismans from inside her pocket before throwing them around, blasting the surrounding wolves. This lasted for several more minutes until Ling’s strength was finally spent. She slumped down, leaning on a nearby tree, panting in exhaustion. Long’s condition was not too much better himself. Sweat poured hard from his forehead, and his usually calm expression turned sombre.
The pack of wolves slowly approached Ling and Long until eventually, the wolf pack surrounded them with their enormous number. “Fuck, fuck, fuck”, Ling cursed with frustration, “Fuck this shit! The villagers weren’t kidding. This truly is the Forest of Death. We’re going to die here, huh….” she mumbled with slight regret. Long slightly glanced at Ling; he flashed a gentle smile at Ling, “Don’t worry and have faith. We can do this”, Long encouraged. Long’s appearance, coupled with his gentle smile, made Ling blush a little, “Y-yeah”, she muttered with a slightly red face.
Then, Long looked at the pack of wolves that was slowly approaching with a murderous gaze. “I guess I need to go a little bit serious”, Long sighed. “Ling, please brace yourself”, he warned before casting a barrier around Ling. “What do you…..”, before Ling managed to finish her sentence, a massive amount of mana gathered around Long. That same mana was spiralling around Long before entering his body, filling it with power. Long’s body excluded so much mana that his surroundings were trembling. The trees, the ground, the air and even the wolves could feel the pressure emitted by Long. “You’re all dead!”
