Chapter 132: Chapter 132
The soldier began to check Eru’s adventurers’ handbook, flipping it page by page. When he saw multiple signatures from the guild masters of various adventurers guild branches, the soldier’s eyes shot wide open. “I’m sorry for the disrespect, sir”, the soldier’s body perked up, and he put his hand across his chest, “Please, come in. I’m very sorry for making you wait for so long.” Eru was confused; he stared at the soldier in disbelief, “Uh, okay, I did not wait that long. But, why are you acting like this?”
“What do you mean, sir?” the soldier slightly tilted his head, “Serving a future S class adventurers is a privilege for us, soldiers.” Eru frowned, “S class?” Just before Eru managed to ask another question, the gate to the city broke down, and a man was sent flying outside.
“Say that again to me, bastard!” a woman with long-blonde hair said, stomping the ground with her feet. “How many times should I tell you I’m taking the lead on this one,” the man with a goatee said as he tried standing up. “Not that”, the woman with long-blonde hair cracked her knuckles, “The one after. You said women should stay in the backline, was it?” The man with a goatee had veins popped up on his forehead, “I did not say that!” he yelled, “I said that you should stay back. I don’t want you to get hurt.” The woman with long-blonde hair snorted, “So you said that I was so weak that I’m not worthy of going with you?”
The man with a goatee sighed in exasperation, “It’s not like that. You know what I mean, honey. All I want to do is just to protect you.” The woman with long-blonde hair pursed her lips, “Protect me? Protect yourself first, ora!” she yelled before beating the goatee man up. After that, the blonde-haired woman picked up the battered goatee man by his collar before walking away. Eru watched all of this with bewilderment, “Uhm, what just happened?” The soldier scratched his cheek, “Don’t mind them. It’s a common occurrence here at Sylphid City for those two to bicker around.”
“Really? Interesting”, Eru rubbed his chin. “Then, if you don’t mind, let me lead you into the Adventurers Guild”, the soldiers suggested. Eru nodded, “Lead the way.” As Eru was headed towards the Adventurers Guild, Eru saw the magnificent layout of Sylphid City. Upon entering from the main gate, Eru was greeted by a long wide road decorated with prismarine, aquamarine and grey bricks. The road led to a large round and crowded plaza with benches, lamps, and flower beds. Eru saw four roads were leading to the round plaza. One was where he was now, the entrance road. One was towards a large, modern-looking building to the west. Towards the east, Eru found an open field with a stage at its end. There was no one performing on the stage, but Eru guessed that the stage would be crowded when it was holiday time. There were many food stalls there, with a lot of chairs and tables around them.
The one to Eru’s north led towards another forked road. Towards the left, Eru saw some kind of residential area as there were soldiers placed over there. “This way”, the soldier said; he led Eru to the right from the north road. “Where does that lead?” Eru asked, pointing his finger towards the left. “Oh, that?” the soldier stopped, “That is where most government facilities lay. The governor’s office, the city hall, census office, army barracks, etc. You get the gist.” Eru nodded, “And the Adventurers Guild’s building is not there, I presume?”
“Yup. It used to be there, but the guild master said that the Adventurers Guild should be located right in the centre of the residential district”, the soldier replied. After that brief exchange, the soldier continued to lead Eru over towards the residential district. As Eru walked by towards the residential district, Eru felt something strange, “It feels like I’ve forgotten about something”, Eru mumbled. In heading towards the residential district, the soldier had to lead Eru past the docks. While Eru tried to remember, Eru saw the residential district in full.
The arrangement of buildings in the residential district was erratic, to say the least. Short and tall buildings were mixed with each other, and smaller roads were everywhere. However, that erraticness formed some sort of beauty on its own. “Over here, please, sir Eru”, the soldier said politely while waving his hand. Eru nodded as he followed the soldier towards the tallest and biggest building in the district. The soldier opened the door to the Adventurers Guild’s building, “Here we are”, he said.
Upon entering the Adventurers Guild’s building, Eru found that the Adventurers Guild was quite crowded. “It’s this crowded every day?” Eru asked. The soldier nodded, “Of course. Adventurers are a lucrative profession here at these ends.” Eru rubbed his chin, “Interesting.” While Eru was pondering, the receptionist finally noticed the soldier by the door. “Oh, sir James, how may I help you?” a young woman with ginger-coloured bob cut hair asked while slightly tilting her head.
“Hello, miss May. I’ve brought you someone that you could never believe”, the soldier, who the ginger-haired young woman called James, said with excitement. Before James could continue any further, Eru interrupted James by standing in front of him, “Good afternoon, miss” Eru bowed before approaching the receptionist closer, “I’m Eru, nice to meet you.” May slightly nodded her head, “Nice to meet you too. Did you come here to put up a job or did you come here wanting to join our Adventurers Guild?” she asked.
“Neither of those”, Eru shook his head. Then, Eru took out his adventurers handbook, “I trust that you know what I mean”, he said as he handed the adventurers handbook to May. May received Eru’s handbook before flipping it around. When May finished flipping Eru’s adventurers’ handbook, her eyes widened. After that, May turned her head towards James, “Thank you for your assistance, sir James, but I’ll take it from here.” Being a smart alec, James immediately knew what May meant. James looked at Eru with embarrassment, ‘Of course, I’m so dumb. He came to the city queueing like an ordinary person, avoiding attention in the first place, and here I am parading him all across the city,’ he thought.
Then, James slightly nodded to Eru and May, “Then, my job here is done”, he said before leaving. If Eru could know what was inside of James’ mind when he left, Eru would’ve let out a chuckle. What Eru wanted was to not cause a commotion in the Adventurers Guild. In fact, Eru was glad that someone showed him around the city. “Well, then, Mr Eru, would you please follow me” May suggested. “Sure”, Eru followed May upstairs. May led Eru to the front of a large door, “We’re going up with the lift”, May said as she pressed the up symbol. She smiled at Eru, “I bet you have never seen one of these before, huh?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah, never”, Eru said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. “Right? This technology is a form of magi-tech that takes people from one floor to another super fast. And this was only possible thanks to the excellent works from the genius works of our very own, Sylphid Academy”, May said, puffing her chest with pride. “Sylphid Academy? Where is that?” Eru asked. Before May managed to answer, a sound alerted them that the lift had arrived at their location. The door opened automatically, “After you”, Eru extended his hand. “Of course, thank you”, May smiled as she entered the lift first, then Eru followed suit.
“You’re asking where Sylphid Academy is?”
“Yeah. I did not see such a building on the way here. But, I haven’t been to the governmental district yet”, Eru stated. “You’d be surprised when you find out where Sylphid Academy is”, May winked. Eru sighed, ‘Why do people in this world like to speak this way? Why can’t they just tell me straight to the point,’ Eru thought while shaking his head.
With a ding, the lift’s door opened automatically, revealing an open hallway with a single door at the end. “We’re here”, May said as she exited the lift. After that, May led Eru into the open hallway. Upon arriving in front of the door, May gently knocked on the door, “Excuse me, guild master. There’s someone here for you.” May did not receive a reply for a hot minute, “Uh, the guild master is not here?” Eru asked. May shook her head, “Oh no, he’s not out; he’s here. That’s just what the guild master always does. He replied slowly.”
After waiting a few seconds more, Eru heard a familiar voice coming from behind the door. “Please come in, my dear May”, the guild master voice echoes in the open hallway. May smiled wryly, “Sure”, she sighed. When May opened the door, Eru saw a familiar person sitting beside the window with a pose that reminded Eru of a certain statue back on Earth.
“Welcome to my humble abode, traveller.”
